On arrival, the Benola Team, made up of PPIT Members and friends of Benola, bearing gifts and relief items for the center, was warmly received by the Assistant Head-Mistress, Mrs Afolayan Taiwo and the PTA Chairman, Mr Babatunde Willoughby.
Thereafter, the Team was treated to a well-rehearsed performance during which about 40 of their articulate residents, led by one of their own popularly called Pastor Muyiwa Durojaye, welcomed us with songs of praise and a prayer for Benola.
The team presented gift items consisting of food items, water, medication and toiletries. Photographs with the management and some students were also taken.
The team was then taken on a guided tour of the facilities, made up of hostels. Class rooms, vocational workshops and play area. The tour was rounded off in the Gift Shop where the items produced by the students in vocational training were displayed and available for purchase.
The highpoint of the tour was the group of hostels housing over 40 CP residents with severe limitations including the oldest resident in the home, a healthy looking 65yr man who, though blind as well as deaf and dumb, has been there for the past 37years.
Virtually every resident at Modupe Cole would make a great story but somehow, the case of a 12-year-old boy with CP, a new resident in the home, stood out because, though he had previously been well cared for, he was brought after having been found abandoned at a MFM all night prayer rally.
Situated in the heart of Lagos, a stone throw from UNILAG Gate and St Finbarr’s College, Modupe Cole is a one of a kind facility that is both home, school and a vocational training centre catering to the needs of over 300 individuals in the age group 8 – 70years, who are living with various disabilities. Interestingly, a large number of the residents live with CP.
It is to the credit of the Management and Staff at Modupe Cole, that the residents all look healthy and well fed while the entire environment was neat and well kept.
Indeed, to all of us who visited, it was a very fulfilling experience and one which, for those who feel life has dealt them the short end of the stick, would certainly be what the doctor ordered.
